Technique, theory, and general musicianship are foundational proficiencies necessary for any musician to progress with and enjoy the pursuit of music. An effective pedagogical strategy will develop all of these areas in tandem, tailoring specific exercises to meet deficiencies. Equally important is for the student’s specific interests to be addressed; as long as we’ve ‘eaten our vegetables’ I’m happy to teach what the student wants to learn. For many, that will be a progression of jazz improvisation techniques and repertoire. I give constructive criticisms and assignments that will challenge but not overwhelm. I acknowledge when a student has done something well. I don’t scold students for skipping practice days, but I reinforce that the most effortless progress comes from consistent effort.
